*the FMP brief requires me to create either a music video, documentary or a short film (fiction or no non-fiction) for Hidden in Plain Sight Media (HIPS). HIPS is a new, local arts company offering a variety of digital media content to their target audience of young aspiring creators with the aim to inspire them to acknowledge the world around them whilst showcasing the work they can create, the products I create should encourage them to engage with their own creative processes. Their mission is to educate and entertain viewers and reveal things in life that are hidden in plain sight. They will host a competition for young, local content creators to develop, pitch and produce a range of digital content types that reflect their online brand identity and company values. The winning entries will be screened at an arts festival scheduled for June 2024 alongside other creative exhibitions. I have 9 months to make a test documentary, music video and short film and finally develop a final, professional and unique video which will inspire other young creative minds to create their own work and notice the things in life that are hidden in plain sight.

LOVE/ROMANCE
1)
the theme of love/romance is commonly used in films. films tend to focus on the "honeymoon" phase of a relationship when everything is new and exciting. we don't see the mundane day-to-day stuff that makes up most relationships. in my short film i'd aim to show this grey area that isn't portrayed.
example:
Call Me By Your Name (2017)
ANGER
2)
the theme of anger for me is one of the most effective ways of showing emotions in films. when displayed correctly and appropriately it can be really powerful. anger is most commonly used in films involving crime or violence, however, in my short film i'd use it to be a disadvantage to people, rather than a way to commit crime.
example:
Breaking Bad (2009-2013)
FEAR
3)
films about fear are commonly horror, mystery or sci-fi. it will often will displayed or conveyed through the use of scary characters such as pennywise from 'it'. but i don't want to use fear in this context, i would want to use it in more of an everyday setting where fear can set in from things that aren't scary.

IT (2017)

evaluation
So, the short film project didn't exactly go as planned. We hit a bunch of issues along the way - the script felt off, some key scenes just didn't come together, and we had problems with the locations. Basically, things started going south pretty quickly, this was mainly due to the script and idea being too ambitious. Rather than scrapping the whole thing, we had to think and improvise. We reworked some scenes on the fly, used what we had to craft a new narrative, and leaned heavily into a more love at first sight style. It was chaotic, but it taught me a lot about problem-solving under pressure and the importance of flexibility in filmmaking. While it wasn’t the film we set out to make, it turned into a unique piece that still tells a very short story, just not the one I originally wrote. Despite the hurdles, I’m proud of how we adapted and made the best out of a tough situation. It also taught me how hard it is to create a film, even if it is short!
